- My final recommendation
My last Zhuhai trip started in a queue at seven in the morning. I had spent the night on the Macau side, walked to the Gongbei border gate with a coffee and a backpack, and shuffled through the hall with a few hundred other people before the day properly got going. Twenty minutes later I was on the mainland, in a different currency and a different phone network, with a taxi rank on my left, a railway station on my right, and no clear idea which one I wanted. I’ve been crossing at Gongbei on and off for a decade, and I still stand on the pavement for a second working out which way the city runs.
That is the thing about Zhuhai: the city is shaped by what it sits next to. Macau is a walk across the border, Hong Kong is a bridge or a ferry away, and Guangzhou is about an hour up the intercity line. Zhuhai itself is a planned Special Economic Zone strung along its coastline, so it is long and thin rather than dense. The Macau crossing and the rail terminus sit at one end, the Hengqin theme parks are around the corner from there, Lovers Road runs along the eastern water, the exhibition and casino-facing strip sits at Wanzai, and the hot-spring and port country lies away to the west. Which of those you actually see comes down to where you sleep.
I did the work rather than guessing. On 18 October 2026 I pulled the published guest policy and the nightly rate for the properties in this guide. The price search returned 12 Zhuhai properties with a rate on screen for one night, two adults, and the guest-policy check covered the same 12 properties — and every one of them, 12 out of 12, publishes the line “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.”
The one thing to check before booking anywhere in China: open the hotel page, find Policies → Guests Accepted, and look for that same line, “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.” It takes two minutes, and the background — the rule was clarified in May 2024, and hotels are not permitted to turn away foreign nationals for lacking foreign-related qualifications — plus what to do if a front desk pushes back, sits in our China hotel guide for foreign guests.

Quick Overview: Which Area Is For You?#
| Area | Best For | The Trade-off | Typical Rate (18 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gongbei Port and Fuhuali | Macau day trips, food on foot, the cheapest beds in the city | Border crowds and traffic, and little quiet | $12–32 |
| Zhuhai Station and the rail side of Gongbei | One-night stops, arriving by intercity rail | A station district, not a holiday one | $16–51 |
| Lovers Road and the Qinglv Lu coast | Sea views, the promenade after dark | You pay more than Gongbei for the same city | $45–47 |
| Hengqin and Chimelong | Families, the theme park, full resort days | Resort prices, far from the border | $139 |
| The exhibition centre at Wanzai | Conventions, the Macau skyline across the water | Quiet when there is no event on | $73 |
| Gaolan Port and Ocean Spring | Hot springs, late flights, total quiet | The far side of the city | $43 |
The spread is wide: the cheapest bed in our check was $12 and the most expensive room $139, and almost every rung in between is filled.
1. Gongbei Port and the Fuhuali Cluster#
If you are here to cross into Macau, or to eat your way around a border market, this is where you sleep. Gongbei is the busiest land crossing between the mainland and Macau for pedestrians, and the streets around the plaza and the Fuhuali shopping area behind it are dense, flat and full of food — Cantonese roast counters, noodle shops, milk-tea chains and, at night, a market that never quite empties.
The practical pull is that everything is walkable. You do not need a taxi to cross a border, find dinner or buy a SIM card, and the district has the worn, commercial energy that border towns everywhere have. The cost is noise, and this is not the Zhuhai of the postcards.
Hotels with the rates we pulled:
- Zhuhai Huogongdian Hotel (Vanke Shihua No.66) — the cheapest bed in our entire Zhuhai check, in a residential-retail block just back from the crossing, and the right anchor if your only plan is Macau.
$12 (about ¥90)— Check prices on Trip.com - Yibo Hotel (Zhuhai Gongbei Port Fuhuali Store) — a step up in space for a small step up in price, and the branch name puts you inside the Fuhuali shopping cluster itself.
$25 (about ¥180)— Check prices on Trip.com - Pearl Hotel (Zhuhai Gongbei Port Couples Middle Road Branch) — the most comfortable of the three border-side picks, on a proper commercial street rather than in an apartment block.
$32 (about ¥230)— Check prices on Trip.com
All three sit within a walk of the crossing, so the real question here is only how much you want to pay to avoid a shared corridor.
2. Zhuhai Station and the Rail Side of Gongbei#
Zhuhai Station is the southern end of the intercity railway from Guangzhou, and it sits just across the road from the border gate — close enough that you can arrive by train, cross the street, and be queuing for Macau within a few minutes. That one fact makes this the most useful district in the city for anyone moving on quickly.
What you get for your money here is apartment-style inventory rather than hotel-company polish. Several of the towers around the station are serviced apartments and boutique floors — a river-view flat, a themed boutique room, a business hotel above a commercial podium — which is why one district spans $16 to $51 a night. It is a functional address rather than a beautiful one, but the transport is unbeatable.
Hotels with the rates we pulled:
- Lianyin · Qimeng | LOTUSHIDE · DREAM Lianhua · Boutique Hotel (Gongbei Port Zhuhai Station) — the second-cheapest room in our check and the playful end of the boutique spectrum, minutes from both the station and the border.
$16 (about ¥110)— Check prices on Trip.com - Zhuhai · Fullme | Fullme High Altitude River View Apartment (Gongbei Port Zhuhai Station) — the value pick of the rail side, with the water view and the apartment layout you are paying for.
$18 (about ¥130)— Check prices on Trip.com - Zhuhai Longzhuda International Hotel (Gongbei Port Railway Station Branch) — the business-hotel option of the group, with a lobby, a restaurant and staff who see a lot of one-night guests.
$50 (about ¥360)— Check prices on Trip.com - Zhuhai L Hotel (Gongbei Port High-speed Railway Station) — one dollar above the Longzhuda and the top of the station bracket, the one to take if you want the shortest possible walk to a departure board.
$51 (about ¥360)— Check prices on Trip.com
Two of these came in under $20 and two just above $50, which tells you the district is really two markets sharing one postcode: backpackers and one-night transits on one side, small business hotels on the other.
3. Lovers Road and the Qinglv Lu Coast#
Lovers Road — Qinglv Lu — is the long coastal promenade that gives Zhuhai its holiday face, running along the eastern shore with the Fisher Girl statue, the beaches and the Zhuhai Grand Theatre on its seaward side. This is where locals go at sunset and where visitors take the photograph they came for, and staying on it changes the feel of a trip from border logistics to an actual holiday.
Both properties here are named after promenade landmarks: the Merlinhod sits by the Sun and Moon Shell theatre building, the Atour by the Love Post Office on the same stretch of coast. You are trading the cheapest beds in the city for sea air and a walkable waterfront, and for a couple of dollars that looks like a fair trade.
Hotels with the rates we pulled:
- Merlinhod Hotel (Zhuhai Lovers’ Road, Riyuebei Grand Theatre Branch) — the promenade pick at the lower end, named for the theatre that sits on the water at Riyuebei.
$45 (about ¥320)— Check prices on Trip.com - Atour Hotel (Zhuhai Love Post Office on Qinglv Road) — two dollars more for the chain-standard version of the same stretch of coast, and the most predictable room in our coastal pair.
$47 (about ¥330)— Check prices on Trip.com
For a two-night weekend with no border crossing in it, this is the section I would pick, and the $2 gap between the two is small enough that the difference is the brand rather than the location.
4. Hengqin and Chimelong#
Hengqin is the island district south-west of the centre, and it is a different Zhuhai: wide roads, new towers and the Chimelong resort, whose Ocean Kingdom park is the reason most families come. If you are travelling with children, this section is not really a choice — the alternative is a long daily transfer to the gate.
The trade-off is that you are inside a resort rather than a city neighbourhood, and the rates here sit at the top of our whole check by a wide margin. The compensation is that the Hengqin border point and the Macau light-rail link are on this side of the city, so a Macau day out is easier from here than the map suggests.
Hotel with the rate we pulled:
- Chimelong Penguin Hotel — the most expensive room in our 18 October check by a clear distance, and the one that comes with the theme park on its doorstep rather than a taxi ride away.
$139 (about ¥990)— Check prices on Trip.com
Our sample caught just this one property on Hengqin, and I will not pad the list to make the section look fuller. Treat it as the anchor of the district rather than the whole of it.
5. The Exhibition Centre at Wanzai#
Wanzai is the strip between Gongbei and Hengqin, facing Macau across the water, and the Zhuhai International Convention and Exhibition Center gives the district its anchor. It exists for conferences, expos and the casino-facing trade, and it does that job well.
For everyone else the appeal is the view and the space: you look across the channel at the Macau skyline and drive to the border in minutes without being in the middle of it. What you lose is any sense of a neighbourhood — outside event dates, this is a quiet part of the city.
Hotel with the rate we pulled:
- Sheraton Zhuhai Hotel — the convention anchor and the second-priciest room in our check, and the obvious choice if you are in town for the exhibition centre itself.
$73 (about ¥520)— Check prices on Trip.com
One property is a thin sample for a district, so read this as the convention answer rather than as a guide to Wanzai hotels generally.
6. Gaolan Port and Ocean Spring#
The last section is the west of the city, which is a genuinely different trip. Gaolan is Zhuhai’s deep-water port and the Ocean Spring area is the hot-spring resort country out here, close to Jinwan airport and a long way from the Macau border. You come here for quiet, water and a late flight, not for the sights.
The distance is the whole trade-off. This is a car or a coach ride from Gongbei, not a metro hop, and you should treat it as its own night rather than a base for a city itinerary. In exchange, the rates are gentler than the resort label suggests, and the mornings belong to you.
Hotel with the rate we pulled:
- Park inn by Radisson Hotel (Gaolan Port, Zhuhai) — the resort-side pick at well under the price of the city’s conference and theme-park hotels, and the sensible landing spot before or after a Jinwan flight.
$43 (about ¥310)— Check prices on Trip.com
Our check caught a single property this far west, so take it as a useful data point rather than a district survey.
Quick Budget Breakdown#
| Budget | What You Get | Example Hotels From Our Check | Nightly Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | A bed near the border or the station | Zhuhai Huogongdian Hotel, Lianyin Qimeng LOTUSHIDE DREAM, Fullme High Altitude River View Apartment | $12–18 |
| Value | A proper room, still in the border cluster | Yibo Hotel (Fuhuali), Pearl Hotel (Couples Middle Road) | $25–32 |
| Mid | The coast, the hot springs, or an outlying resort | Park inn by Radisson (Gaolan Port), Merlinhod (Lovers’ Road), Atour (Love Post Office) | $43–47 |
| Premium | Business hotels and the convention side | Zhuhai Longzhuda International, Zhuhai L Hotel, Sheraton Zhuhai | $50–73 |
| Splurge | The theme-park resort | Chimelong Penguin Hotel | $139 |
Every rate is from our own check on 18 October 2026 — one night, two adults, USD, converted here at roughly ¥7.1 to the dollar — and they are indicative rather than fixed. Zhuhai has a strong conference and cross-border trade, so the same room can look very different in a peak week.
Practical Tips for Zhuhai#
Crossing into Macau at Gongbei. This is the crossing most visitors use, and it is a pedestrian one, so you walk it rather than drive it; the gate opens early and runs late. Keep your passport ready for both sides, because you clear mainland exit and then Macau entry as two separate formalities, and remember that Macau runs its own immigration and visa rules — the visa-free guide for 2026 covers the mainland picture and you should check Macau’s separately.
Zhuhai Station and the rail connections. The intercity railway from Guangzhou ends at Zhuhai Station, right beside the Gongbei crossing, which is why the rail side of the district fills up with one-night guests. Macau’s own light rail has been extended to the Hengqin border point, so on the Hengqin side you can ride it towards the Cotai strip instead of hunting for a bus. Our China high-speed rail guide covers buying tickets and boarding as a foreigner.
The Hengqin border point. If your hotel is at Chimelong or anywhere on the south-western side, use Hengqin rather than Gongbei. It is the newer crossing, it stays open around the clock, and it saves you a tedious cross-city transfer before you have even started your day in Macau.
Lovers Road is a walk, not a district. The promenade is the best thing in central Zhuhai and it is at its best in the hour after sunset, when the Fisher Girl statue and the theatre lights come on and the whole city seems to be out on bicycles. Stay on the coast side if you want to do this properly, because a hotel two kilometres inland turns a pleasant evening into a taxi ride.
Seasons matter more than you think. Zhuhai is subtropical and coastal: summers are hot, humid and inside the typhoon window, spring is wet, and the most comfortable months run from autumn into early winter, when the air dries out and the promenade is at its best. Book the coast for those months and the border district for the sticky ones.
Getting around and paying. Zhuhai is spread out, so a mix of taxi, ride-hailing and walking beats any single mode. Set up a payment app before you arrive — everything from a border-market snack to a hotel deposit runs on QR codes, and our WeChat Pay and Alipay guide walks through the foreign-card setup, while the DiDi guide covers the ride-hailing app. For maps and driver calls you want a working connection from the moment you land, which is what our China internet guide for 2026 is for.
FAQ#
Do Zhuhai hotels accept foreign guests? Yes, and we checked rather than assumed. On 18 October 2026 we pulled the published guest policy for the properties in this guide and all 12, 12 out of 12, published the line “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.” Our price search the same day also returned 12 properties with a rate on screen. Chinese hotels have not been permitted to refuse foreign nationals for lacking foreign-related qualifications since the rule was clarified in May 2024. Check the line anyway, and see our full guide if a desk pushes back.
Which area of Zhuhai should I stay in? Gongbei if you are crossing to Macau or want the cheapest food-and-border base, Lovers Road if you want the sea and the promenade, Hengqin if you are travelling with children and heading for Chimelong, and Wanzai or Gaolan Port if you are here for a convention or an outlying resort. The city is long and thin, so pick the end that matches your plan rather than the middle.
Can I walk from Zhuhai into Macau? Yes. Gongbei is a pedestrian crossing and it is the one most visitors use, right beside Zhuhai Station. You clear mainland exit and Macau entry as two separate steps, so carry your passport and check Macau’s own entry rules for your nationality before you queue.
Is Chimelong worth staying at rather than visiting? If you are doing Ocean Kingdom with children, yes — the Chimelong Penguin Hotel was also the most expensive room in our check by a wide margin, so you are paying for the park on your doorstep rather than for the room. If the theme park is not your reason for coming, stay in the centre and save the money.
How do I reach Zhuhai from Guangzhou or Hong Kong? The intercity railway from Guangzhou ends at Zhuhai Station beside the Gongbei crossing, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge links the city to Hong Kong by road and shuttle. Both put you in the border district rather than on the coast, so plan the last leg to your area before you arrive.
Should I stay west at Gaolan Port or Ocean Spring? Only if you have a reason to be over there — a Jinwan flight, a hot-spring weekend or a genuine wish for quiet. It is a car ride from the border and the promenade, so it works as its own night rather than as a base for a Zhuhai itinerary.
My Final Recommendation#
- Crossing to Macau: Zhuhai Huogongdian Hotel at $12 if you want the cheapest bed in the city, Yibo Hotel at $25 for a little more space in Fuhuali, or Pearl Hotel at $32 for the most comfortable of the border-side three.
- Arriving by train and moving on: Zhuhai · Fullme Apartment at $18 for the river view, or Zhuhai L Hotel at $51 for the shortest walk to the platform.
- The seaside weekend: Merlinhod Hotel at $45 by the Sun and Moon Shell theatre, or Atour at $47 by the Love Post Office — two dollars apart on the same stretch of Qinglv Lu.
- Family trip: Chimelong Penguin Hotel at $139, the one property in our check that puts the theme park outside your window.
- The odd nights out: Sheraton Zhuhai at $73 for the exhibition centre, and Park inn by Radisson at $43 at Gaolan Port for a hot-spring stop before a Jinwan flight.
The pattern to take away: Zhuhai is cheap for a coastal Chinese city of its size, and the money you save by staying in Gongbei gets spent again on taxis if your plans are on the coast or at Hengqin. Match the district to the trip and the rates do the rest.
If you would rather have the border crossings, the intercity legs and a driver for the resort side handled end to end — Zhuhai with Macau on one side and Guangzhou on the other — that is what we quote for people directly. Our China private tour cost guide shows what that usually runs to; tell us your dates and group size and we will come back with a plan. If you are still shaping the wider route, the China 2-week itinerary, the first-timer tips, the travel checklist and the China travel budget are the four pages I send people to first.
