Where to Stay in Xiamen: Harbour vs Campus

··3337 words·16 mins·

I made the mistake of booking out in Jimei on my first trip to Xiamen, because the rate was half of anything on the island and the map made it look close. It wasn’t. I spent 40 minutes each way crossing the bay, and on the second morning I queued for a Gulangyu sailing that had sold out three days earlier — tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, which you only learn once.

Xiamen is an island city off the Fujian coast, and it’s the trip people take when they want China to slow down. The old harbour district is where the ferries and the food are, the university quarter next door holds Nanputuo Temple and a beach, and Zengcuoan along the south shore is a fishing village that turned into guesthouses. Huandao Road — the ring road — runs the coast, the airport sits at the north end, and high-speed trains use Xiamen North, across the water in Jimei.

That layout produces a sharper fork than most Chinese cities do: stay by the ferries on the old-harbour side, on the campus side where the sea views are, or out by the airport for a transit night.

So I ran the check I run everywhere. On 16 October 2026 I pulled the current nightly rate and the published guest policy for 13 Xiamen hotels across Zhongshan Road and the old harbour, the Xiamen University and Zengcuoan side, the Gaoqi airport belt and the ferry approach. Every rate below is the real number from that check — one night, two adults, US dollars. Seven of the 13 displayed a price and six didn’t; where there was no number I’ve said so rather than guessed.

The one thing to check before booking anywhere in China: open the hotel page, find Policies → Guests Accepted, and look for the line “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.” All 13 properties in this guide carried it on 16 October 2026. The background to that rule — and what to do if a front desk pushes back — is in our China hotel guide for foreign guests.

1. Zhongshan Road and The Old Harbour: The Downtown Base
#

Zhongshan Road is the pedestrian spine of the old town — a kilometre of arcaded shophouses behind the harbour front, with the real city in the lanes off it: Dazhong Road, Siming Road and the small streets running down to the water. The boats are here too. Lundu terminal sits at the bottom of the district, so you walk out of your hotel and you’re at the dock.

Why stay here: everything a short trip needs sits inside a 20-minute walk. Lundu is the evening tourist wharf for Gulangyu, and where the evening sailings return. Zhenhai Road, the southern terminus of Metro Line 1, is minutes away, and Line 2 reaches the cruise centre for the daytime ferry.

The catch: it’s the tourist face of Xiamen and it behaves like one. The lanes are rebuilt rather than ancient, the shops nearest the ferry sell the same souvenirs, and the crowds peak between 18:00 and 21:00.

Hotels with the rates we pulled:

  • GreenTree Eastern Hotel (Xiamen Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street) — the cheapest room in the entire check, standing on the pedestrian street itself. Chain-standard and compact; you’re paying for the address. US$23 (about ¥165). Check prices on Trip.com
  • MELODY OF SEA HOTEL — a step up in comfort for about $20 more, in the same district, with the harbour walk on the doorstep. US$43 (about ¥305). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Niaodao seascape chaosu — a small sea-view property rather than a hotel, and at this price it’s the cheapest way in our check to get water in the frame. US$46 (about ¥325). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Swiss Grand Xiamen — the full-service landmark of the district, and the only upper-tier property downtown in our check with a front desk that will still be awake at midnight. US$91 (about ¥650). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Vishan Garden Boutique Hotel (Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street Store) — a garden boutique property in the same blocks. No rate was published for our test date, so check live prices

My honest read on the old harbour: for two nights on a first trip this is where I book, and honestly I wouldn’t spend much. You’re buying a walk to the ferry and a walk to dinner — take the $23 room; I keep telling people the difference deserves to be spent on food.

2. Xiamen University and Nanputuo: The Campus Side
#

Nanputuo Temple sits at the foot of Wulao Peak, beside the university, and it’s free to enter. Go early: at 7am it’s incense and old men on the steps, and by 10am it’s coach groups. Behind the temple, the Wulao Peak path climbs to a rock with a view over the campus and the harbour.

Xiamen University is next door — one of the most photographed campuses in China, with Furong Lake and the beach across Huandao Road at Baicheng. Access is controlled and visitor numbers are limited, so bring your passport and check the entry process first.

Why stay here: you wake up next to a temple, a beach and a mountain path, and you’re 10 minutes by taxi from the old town. If sea view is what you came for, the towers on this stretch deliver it better than the harbour side.

The catch: the market is thin and expensive. Our two verified properties came in at $47 and $171 with nothing in between — this quarter is a serviced apartment or a five-star brand.

  • Xiamen Blue Shark Sea View Hotel Apartment (Shimao Twin Towers Branch) — a serviced apartment in the twin towers: a kitchen, a washing machine and a view over the water for less than half the price of the brand hotels nearby. US$47 (about ¥335). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Conrad Xiamen — the top of our check by a wide margin, and the obvious pick if you want a pool, a gym and staff who speak English without thinking about it. US$171 (about ¥1,210). Check prices on Trip.com

3. Zengcuoan and The South Coast: Village Alleys and Sea Views
#

Zengcuoan started life as a fishing village on the south shore and now runs on guesthouses, coffee windows and snack stalls packed into lanes so narrow the traffic arrives by scooter. It sits on Huandao Road, with Baicheng beach within a bike ride.

Why stay here: it’s the closest Xiamen gets to a beach holiday. You wake up 10 minutes from the water, the food is local rather than hotel-priced, and the pace is a change from the harbour crowds.

The catch: the metro doesn’t reach the south coast, so you come in along Huandao Road by bus or taxi and leave the same way. Expect noise in high season, and treat “sea view” with suspicion: here it can mean a slice of blue over the next roof.

  • Jingyue Seaview Villa — a villa-category property selling the sea rather than a hotel lobby; no rate was published for our test date, so check live prices
  • Xiamen Shanxun Everlasting Sea Hotel — a sea-facing small hotel, the kind with a rooftop and a reception that closes early; unpriced on our date, so check live prices
  • Fengwei Lanxi Sea View Hotel — the third of the coastal cluster; again no rate shown on 16 October, check live prices

4. The Gaoqi Airport Belt: For Transit Nights
#

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is about 11 km from the centre — one of the closest-in major-city airports in China, which makes the airport belt a narrow category here. Terminal 3 handles international and domestic flights; Terminal 4 is domestic only.

How the transfer works: no metro line runs into the terminals. You take the Airport Express shuttle from Gaoqi metro station — roughly 09:00 to 21:00, every 25 minutes, ¥10 — then ride the metro into town, where the fare runs from ¥2 to about ¥8. A taxi or DiDi from arrivals takes about 25 minutes to Zhongshan Road, with a ¥10 meter flagfall. After roughly 23:00 the shuttle and metro both stop.

  • New East Asia Hotel (Xiamen International Airport) — the cheapest airport-side room in our check and the practical answer to a 6am departure. US$32 (about ¥230). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Xiamen Junya Heyueju (Gaoqi Airport) — a second airport-adjacent property, aimed at the same traveller. No rate was published for our date — check live prices

One thing to check here, and it’s a big one: Xiamen’s airport is mid-move. The new Xiang’an International Airport, on Dadeng Island, was still under construction and in its completion and flight-test phase when we checked, with reporting through 2026 pointing to a handover from Gaoqi around the end of the year and no final date fixed. Confirm which airport your flight uses before booking.

5. The Gulangyu Ferry Side and The Ring Road
#

If your Xiamen is really about Gulangyu, your hotel is decided by the ferry timetable, and it has two faces. Daytime tourist sailings leave from the Xiamen International Cruise Center — shown as Xiagu or Dongdu on some maps — and Metro Line 2 has a station about five minutes from the wharf, Exit 2. From the early evening, around 17:50 in winter and 18:50 in summer, the tourist service moves to Lundu, beside Zhongshan Road, and the evening sailings from the island land there too. Boats arrive at Sanqiutian, closest to Longtou Road, or Neicuo’ao on the quieter west side.

Wutong Passenger Terminal is a separate thing, and the name gets mixed up. It’s on the north-east coast and it’s the port for the Kinmen ferries — hourly sailings, about 30 minutes on the water.

  • Sheraton Xiamen Hotel — the full-service international property on the north side of the island, on Jiahe Road in Huli, with its own published driving times putting it about 15 minutes from the airport and 20 from downtown. No rate was shown on our test date, so check live prices

Huandao Road loops the island’s coast, and the southern stretch past Baicheng beach and Zengcuoan is the best half-day in the city that doesn’t involve a ticket.

What a $23 Room Actually Gets You
#

Seven of the 13 properties in our check showed a price, from $23 to $171 — a seven-fold spread, and the widest I’ve measured in a Chinese city this year outside Chongqing’s panorama floors.

  • US$23 — GreenTree Eastern, Zhongshan Road. Compact chain room, working air conditioning, a location that saves you taxi money every day. No view, no lobby, no English breakfast.
  • US$32 — New East Asia, airport. The same quality of room as the $23 one, with a different problem attached: you’re 11 km from the food.
  • US$43–46 — Melody of Sea, Niaodao. The $20 jump from the bottom buys either a boutique feel in the old town or an actual sea view. Best value band in Xiamen.
  • US$47 — Blue Shark apartment, university side. A kitchen and a tower view for the price of a mid-range hotel room.
  • US$91–171 — Swiss Grand to Conrad. The top of the market, where you’re paying for service and an address: doormen, a proper lobby, a pool.

What you give up at the bottom is space, a view and English at the desk — not cleanliness, and not the legal right to check in. All 13 carry the same all countries/regions welcome policy.

Practical Tips for Xiamen
#

Book the Gulangyu ferry before anything else. I’ve learned the hard way to do this first: the island charges no admission and needs no island-wide reservation, but the ferry regularly sells out. Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead including the day of travel, with each day’s allocation released at 9am. Book on the operator’s own channels: the ferry mini-programme on WeChat or Alipay. A foreign passport registers there under “other document type”; some numbers have to be verified at the manual ticket window, so leave 20 minutes. The standard round trip is ¥35 and the return stays valid for 20 days, so you don’t pick a return sailing. Check-in opens 20 minutes before departure and closes 10 minutes before, and copies of your passport aren’t accepted at the gate.

Register your address within 24 hours. Hotels do this for you at check-in, which is why you hand over your passport at the desk. If you book a private apartment that doesn’t register guests, the obligation is yours: in person, at the local police station, within 24 hours of arriving. Our China hotel guide for foreign guests covers the check-in side.

Typhoon season runs from June to September, and Fujian sits in the typhoon belt. The peak risk is August and September, and a direct hit can stop ferries, flights and trains for a day or two. Build a buffer day before an international departure and keep your first and last nights cancellable.

Set up payments before you land. Xiamen’s metro and buses run on QR codes from Alipay and WeChat Pay, and the ticket machines generally take only Chinese bank cards, cash or local mobile payment. Our guide to WeChat Pay and Alipay for tourists covers the setup, and staying connected in China with an eSIM sorts the data.

Take the train, and know which station. High-speed services use Xiamen North, across the bay in Jimei, and Xiamen Station downtown — two different places, and the wrong one costs you the train. From Xiamen North, Shanghai is about five hours on the fastest G-trains, second class from about ¥376 (around $53); our where to stay in Shanghai guide handles the other end. Four trains a day run to Hong Kong West Kowloon in three and a half to four and a half hours, second class from about ¥258 (around $36), and those cross-border tickets are released 15 days ahead.

Gaoqi airport is a designated port for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Confirm the eligible-country list with your airline before you fly. Our 2026 visa-free guide tracks the rules, and the China travel checklist covers the rest of the arrival logistics.

FAQ
#

Do Xiamen hotels accept foreign guests? Yes. All 13 hotels we checked on 16 October 2026 publish “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.” Chinese hotels can’t refuse foreign nationals for lacking foreign-related qualifications — that was clarified in May 2024. Check that line in Policies → Guests Accepted anyway, and see our full guide if a desk pushes back.

How do I book the Gulangyu ferry as a foreigner, and how far ahead? Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, released at 9am each day, on the operator’s own channels — the mini-programme on WeChat and Alipay, where a foreign passport registers under “other document type”. The standard round trip is ¥35, the return stays valid for 20 days, and you present the physical passport at the gate. Daytime sailings leave from the Xiamen International Cruise Center; from about 17:50 in winter the tourist service shifts to Lundu, beside Zhongshan Road.

Which area should I stay in for a first trip to Xiamen? Zhongshan Road and the old harbour. You can walk to Lundu for the evening ferry, walk to dinner, and reach Metro Line 1 at Zhenhai Road without a taxi. Book the GreenTree Eastern at $23, or the Swiss Grand at $91 for a full-service hotel in the same district.

How do I get from Xiamen Gaoqi Airport into town? The airport is about 11 km from the centre. Take the ¥10 Airport Express shuttle from Gaoqi metro station (roughly 09:00 to 21:00, every 25 minutes) and then the metro into town, or a taxi or DiDi from arrivals, which takes about 25 minutes to Zhongshan Road with a ¥10 meter flagfall. After about 23:00 the shuttle and metro stop, so book a bed near the runway instead.

How much should I budget for hotels in Xiamen? Less than you’d expect for a city this popular. In our 16 October 2026 check, the cheapest room in the old town was $23, a sea-view or apartment room ran $43–47, the harbour-side full-service option was $91, and the top of the market sat at $171.

My Final Recommendation
#

  • Two nights, first trip: stay on Zhongshan Road and the old harbour — GreenTree Eastern ($23) for value or Swiss Grand Xiamen ($91) for comfort, walking distance from both the daytime and evening ferry departures.
  • Four nights, or travelling as a couple: the university and Nanputuo side. Blue Shark ($47) gets you a kitchen, a tower view and a beach across the road; Conrad ($171) if this is the trip’s one splurge.
  • Beach and slow days: Zengcuoan and the south coast, where the sea-view villas mostly don’t show prices on booking sites — expect to book direct and early.
  • One-night transit or a 6am flight: the Gaoqi airport belt, and confirm your flight still uses Gaoqi before you pay for a room near it.
  • Gulangyu as the whole point: sleep in the old town by Lundu, book the ferry the day tickets open, and take the first sailing.

If you’d rather have Fujian handled end to end — Xiamen and Gulangyu with the tulou, Quanzhou and the coast road, a car, a driver and an English-speaking guide — that’s what we quote for people directly. Our China 2-week itinerary shows where Xiamen fits with Shanghai, Beijing and Guilin, our free itinerary builder is the place to start, what a private tour costs puts numbers on the guide-and-car side, and if you know your dates, just tell us your dates and group size.
