Where to Stay in Lijiang: Old Town vs Shuhe vs Baisha

Contents

Lijiang was the first place in China where I opened a guesthouse window and looked at snow: tiled roofs falling away downhill, and beyond the plain a white mountain the Naxi have treated as sacred for centuries. By seven the lanes below were already full, which is the other half of the story. This is one of the most visited old towns in the country, and where you sleep decides whether you meet a town or a queue.

The city has three old towns rather than one. Dayan, the big one everyone calls Lijiang Old Town, was inscribed by UNESCO in 1997 together with Shuhe and Baisha, and all three are Naxi settlements on the old tea and horse caravan road. Add the modern city around them and the village of Yuhu, and you have half a dozen different places to wake up.

Altitude is the thing the brochures leave out. Lijiang sits at roughly 2,400 m, and the old towns are traffic-free and cobbled, so thin air plus a suitcase on uneven stone is a real combination. I have watched people arrive near midnight, drag a hard-shell case across a kilometre of lane, and start the trip with a headache.

So this time I did the work before writing. On 17 October 2026 I pulled the current nightly rate and the published guest policy for 12 Lijiang hotels across Dayan, Shuhe, Baisha and FOLIDAY Town, Black Dragon Pond, the urban area and the Yulong Snow Mountain side. Every price below is the real number from that check, for one night and two adults, converted at about ¥7.1 to the dollar.

The one thing to check before booking anywhere in China: open the hotel page, find Policies → Guests Accepted, and look for the line “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property.” All 12 properties here carried it when we checked on 17 October 2026. The background — Chinese hotels were told in May 2024 that they cannot refuse foreign nationals for lacking foreign-related qualifications — and what to do if a front desk pushes back is in our China hotel guide for foreign guests.

1. Dayan Old Town
#

Dayan is what people mean when they say Lijiang Old Town. It is about 800 years old and unusually wall-free for a Chinese town of its size, and it is laced with canals and the three-basin wells where the top basin is for drinking water and the bottom for washing. Sifang Street is the centre, the Mu Mansion and Lion Hill sit at its heart, and the northern gate with the big waterwheels is the postcard shot.

Why stay here: everything is on foot — food, tea houses, the Naxi dancing on Sifang Street, the climb up Lion Hill for the rooftop view. You never need a car in the evening.

The catch: it is busy and loud, and many rooms sit inside courtyard compounds no vehicle can reach. Ask your guesthouse which gate is nearest and whether anyone will meet you with a cart; if the answer is vague, look at the south gate.

Hotels with the rates we pulled:

  • Mulanyu Tangsu Hotel — the cheapest room in this entire Lijiang check, and a courtyard property in the old town. US$11 (about ¥78). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Shile Hot Spring. Flowerside Brand Designer Mercure — a designer courtyard property in the old town and the second-cheapest of the twelve. US$13 (about ¥92). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Yangguang lijiang Courtyard — a courtyard stay in the old town at mid-budget money. US$23 (about ¥163). Check prices on Trip.com
  • YinYue·Sifu Designer Scenic Inn (Lijiang Flagship Store) — a designer inn inside the old town, just above the courtyard band. US$24 (about ¥170). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Lijiang pure sunshine · panoramic view of the ancient city and snow mountain — an upstairs room angled at the roofs and the mountain, which is what you pay extra for in Dayan. US$27 (about ¥192). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Songzhuju · Coffee and Tea Holiday Villa · Designer Garden — a bigger, villa-like designer property and the start of the premium end of this list. US$33 (about ¥234). Check prices on Trip.com
  • Lijiang Old Town Fog Gallery · Misty Streamside Rain Corridor Panoramic View home (Mufu Branch) — the top of the Dayan check, stream-side in the Mufu district. US$78 (about ¥554). Check prices on Trip.com

My honest read: this is where I would put a first trip. Four of the seven old-town rooms we checked are under $28, remarkable for a UNESCO site. Book the $11 or $13 room and spend the difference on food.

2. Shuhe Old Town
#

Shuhe is about 4 km north-west of Dayan and it is the second of the three UNESCO clusters. It was a caravan town on the tea and horse road, it has its own Sifang Street and the Nine-Dragon Pond at the top of the village, and it is measurably quieter than Dayan without being empty. The lanes feel narrower and the tour groups are lighter, which is the old town without the crush.

Why stay here: the same architecture and canals with a fraction of the noise, plus a guesthouse culture that assumes you came to sit still. It is also the easiest of the three old towns to pair with a day on the mountain.

The catch: you are 4 km from Dayan, so a meal elsewhere is a short car ride rather than a stroll, and Lijiang has no metro — a ride-hailing app is your transport. Our guide to using DiDi in China covers the app.

  • The Bivou Lijiang — the single Shuhe property our check surfaced, and the design-led one: a boutique conversion in the old town, and by a clear margin the most expensive room we found outside the mountain and Black Dragon Pond. US$70 (about ¥497). Check prices on Trip.com

My honest read: one property is a thin sample, so read the rate as a signal about the top of the Shuhe market rather than the whole village.

3. Baisha Old Town and FOLIDAY Town
#

Baisha is the oldest of the three Naxi settlements, dating from the Song and Yuan dynasties, and the least developed. It is known for its Ming-era murals, painted over roughly three centuries by Han, Tibetan and Naxi artists. It sits about 8 to 10 km north of Dayan, and FOLIDAY Town, a resort and holiday-home development in the Baisha area, has grown up alongside it.

Why stay here: the view. Baisha faces the snow mountain across open fields, with the village roofs low enough that nothing blocks the line of sight. If the trip is really about the mountain and the murals, this is the quietest base that still has restaurants within walking distance.

The catch: it is 8 to 10 km north, so an evening in Dayan means a car both ways, and services are thinner. In exchange you get the clearest mountain mornings in the area.

  • Shiyushi · AstralSnow Skydeck | Golden‑Glow Snow‑View Designer Stay (Baisha Ancient Town) — a designer property in Baisha with a sky deck aimed at the mountain, and the snow-view name is the honest sell. US$24 (about ¥170). Check prices on Trip.com

My honest read: $24 for a designed snow-view room is the standout value in this whole check, if you do not need to be inside Dayan.

4. Black Dragon Pond
#

Black Dragon Pond, known formally as Yuquan Park, is the spring-fed pool at the northern end of Dayan, and it holds the most photographed view in Lijiang: the bridge, the pavilions and the snow mountain reflected in still water. It is part of the Dayan UNESCO cluster, walkable from the northern edge of the old town, and set on the slope below Elephant Hill.

Why stay here: you can reach the water before the tour buses, and the streets around the pond sit a short step from the lanes of north Dayan.

The catch: it is the most expensive corner of the old-town area, and the northern position puts the far end of Dayan on a walk. The maintenance-fee checkpoint has historically been here, so it is where you are most likely to be asked for the fee.

  • Grand Joli Demeure · Du Bo Lin | Er·Schr Schrödinger Art Hotel (Big Waterwheel Branch) — an art-hotel conversion in the Black Dragon Pond and big-waterwheel district, and the most expensive room we checked in the old-town area. US$71 (about ¥504). Check prices on Trip.com

5. Lijiang Urban Area
#

Everything outside the old towns is the modern city, listed as the Lijiang Urban Area on the booking sites, and it is where plenty of travellers end up without meaning to. It is a normal mid-sized Chinese city that happens to have a UNESCO site in the middle of it.

Why stay here: logistics and space. Modern rooms, car access to the door, an easy run out to the railway station and the airport, and a sensible distance to the mountain road.

The catch: there is no atmosphere to come home to. You will take a car or a bus to reach the lanes every time, and the view is a street rather than a mountain. For a business trip, a family that needs the space, or a one-night airport stop, that is a fair trade. For a first trip to Lijiang it is the wrong shape.

  • VENTO · Sunlit Golden Peak Lake View Vacation Hotel — a modern lake-view holiday hotel on the urban side and the most expensive non-mountain room in this check. US$76 (about ¥540). Check prices on Trip.com

6. Yulong Snow Mountain and Yuhu
#

Yulong Snow Mountain, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain of every guidebook, is the massif about 30 km north of the city that gives Lijiang its outline. The glacier cableway climbs to 4,506 m and the boardwalk continues to roughly 4,680 m, high enough that plenty of visitors feel it. At the mountain’s foot sits Yuhu Village, a Naxi settlement about 18 km from Dayan, once home to the botanist and explorer Joseph Rock.

Why stay here: to be on the mountain rather than looking at it. You are ahead of the day-trippers for the cableway and the Blue Moon Valley, and the village below gives you food and lanes without a single tour-group flag.

The catch: the logistics. This is a 30 km run from the city on a climbing road, the village already sits higher than Lijiang’s own 2,400 m, and there is very little around you that is not mountain. You need transport arranged for the whole stay, and if you have not slept a night at 2,400 m yet, going straight up here is the fastest way to lose the first two days of the trip.

  • Lijiang Jianshijian Wild Luxury Holiday Villa (Yulong Snow Mountain Yuhu Village Store) — a villa-style stay in Yuhu village at the mountain’s foot, and the most expensive room in the entire Lijiang check by a wide margin. US$134 (about ¥951). Check prices on Trip.com

Practical Tips for Lijiang
#

Arriving by air. Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) is about 29 km south of Dayan. The shuttle bus runs to the Lantian Hotel near the old town for about ¥20 and takes 40 to 50 minutes, timed around flights; from there a short taxi reaches your guesthouse gate. A metered taxi or DiDi is usually ¥80 to ¥100.

Arriving by train. Lijiang Railway Station sits about 8 km from Dayan, 20 to 30 minutes by road, and it is the only station in the city serving tourists. Lijiang has no metro, so plan on a taxi, a DiDi or one of the city buses near the old town’s west and south gates. The network runs to Dali in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and on to Kunming in around 3.5 hours, and north-west it climbs towards Shangri-La; the China high-speed rail guide covers the booking mechanics.

Altitude. Lijiang sits at about 2,400 m, and the glacier cableway on Yulong Snow Mountain takes you to 4,506 m with no acclimatisation at all. Some visitors notice the altitude in town, more notice it on the mountain. Take the first day slowly, drink more water than usual, go gently on alcohol the first night, and save the mountain for after you have slept at Lijiang’s elevation.

The old-town maintenance fee. This one changes, so confirm it before you travel. Most of the 2026 guides we checked still list an Old Town Maintenance Fee of ¥50 per person under rules effective 1 August 2025, valid 365 days and covering Dayan including Black Dragon Pond plus Baisha and Shuhe. There is no gate across the lanes; it is checked at Black Dragon Pond and at the snow mountain ticket counter. Some 2026 Chinese-language reports claim it has been scrapped, which we could not confirm officially, so budget the ¥50 and treat any saving as a bonus. Set up Alipay, WeChat Pay and a working SIM before you fly — our internet in China in 2026 covers the eSIM question.

The seasons. Lijiang keeps a spring-like climate all year because of the altitude, which is also why the sun is strong overhead and the nights are cold. The clearest stretch runs from November to April, with April to June and September to November usually named as the most comfortable windows. July and August bring the rainy season, when rain tends to arrive in the afternoon and the mountain can hide in cloud for days. Pack layers for a cold evening after a warm afternoon — our China packing list has the short version.

Where Lijiang fits a bigger trip. Lijiang is the middle link in the classic Yunnan line, with Dali to the south-east and Shangri-La to the north-west, and it works as a two or three night stop. Side trips are how most people extend it: Tiger Leaping Gorge is about 86 km away and 2 to 2.5 hours by road to Qiaotou, Lugu Lake is roughly 200 km and about 4 to 5 hours, and the rail line climbs on to Shangri-La at 3,276 m. Our Yunnan itinerary puts the whole route in order, the Dali stay guide and Kunming stay guide cover the other two cities, and a custom Yunnan tour is what we quote for. Our China travel checklist and the 2026 visa-free guide cover the rest of the arrival admin.

FAQ
#

Do Lijiang hotels accept foreign guests? Yes. All 12 hotels in this guide published “Guests from all countries/regions are welcome at this property” when we checked their policy pages on 17 October 2026 — 12 of 12, from the $11 courtyard room in Dayan to the $134 villa under the glacier. Chinese hotels were told in May 2024 that they cannot refuse foreign nationals for lacking foreign-related qualifications. See our full guide if a desk pushes back.

Which old town should I stay in, Dayan or Shuhe or Baisha? Dayan for a first trip, because everything is on foot and the cheapest rooms in our check are there. Shuhe if you want the same architecture with less noise and do not mind a short car ride into town. Baisha if the snow mountain and the murals are the point and you want the clearest view in the area.

How do I get from Lijiang Sanyi Airport into the old town? Take the shuttle bus unless you arrive late: it runs to the Lantian Hotel near the old town for about ¥20, timed around arriving flights, and a short taxi from there reaches your guesthouse gate. A metered taxi or DiDi is around ¥80 to ¥100.

Do I need to worry about altitude in Lijiang? Lijiang sits at about 2,400 m, which is high enough that some visitors notice it, and the glacier cableway on Yulong Snow Mountain reaches 4,506 m with no chance to acclimatise. Take the first day slowly, drink more water than usual, and save the mountain for after you have slept at Lijiang’s elevation.

When is the best time to visit Lijiang? November to April is the driest and clearest stretch, and April to June and September to November are usually named as the most comfortable windows. July and August bring the rainy season, with afternoon rain and cloud that can hide the mountain entirely. Any national holiday week is the busiest and most expensive time of year, so keep your rates flexible.

My Final Recommendation
#

  • First trip, 2–3 nights: stay inside Dayan Old Town. Mulanyu Tangsu Hotel at $11 and Shile Hot Spring Flowerside at $13 are two of the cheapest rooms we have found anywhere in China, and Songzhuju at $33 is the courtyard upgrade.
  • The same trip, quieter: Shuhe Old Town, at The Bivou at $70 if you want design and a boutique conversion.
  • If the mountain view is the point: Baisha, at Shiyushi AstralSnow Skydeck at $24, the best value in this whole check.
  • Best morning walk for the money: Grand Joli Demeure Du Bo Lin at $71 by Black Dragon Pond, if the water-and-mountain photograph is on your list.
  • Mountain days and a villa: Jianshijian Wild Luxury Holiday Villa at $134 in Yuhu, for a stay that is really about Yulong Snow Mountain rather than the town.

If you would rather have a whole Yunnan trip arranged — Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, the snow mountain, the gorge and the climb to Shangri-La, with an English-speaking guide and a driver who knows the mountain roads — that is what we quote for directly. Tell us your dates and group size on our trip planning form and we will come back with a plan.
