I first crossed into Shenzhen at Luohu in 2013, on the last train from Hong Kong, with a reservation for a hotel that its own listing described as “right by the port”. It was right by the port. It was also on the ninth floor of a wholesale building, up a goods lift, above a shop selling phone cases in bulk, and the room had a window that opened onto a wall. I paid ¥180 that night and slept six hours, which was all I needed, but I learned the thing about Shenzhen that still holds: the city is not one place, it is nine or ten places stacked along a 50 km strip, and the booking you make depends entirely on which one you actually need.
