It had three, photographed at dusk, and a price that looked like a mistake for a Chinese beach city in February. The pool was real. What the listing did not say was that the hotel sat behind a row of construction hoardings on the west side of Sanya Bay, 14 km from Dadonghai, with one bus an hour and a beach across six lanes of traffic. I spent six days paying taxi fares to reach the sea I had already paid for.</p>
