Lost in translation? Been there. Here's how to actually travel China without the headache.

I've been getting lost on the metro, paying with QR codes, and accidentally ordering the spiciest dish on the menu since 2017. Everything I learned (the hard way) is on this site.

Quick Answers: China Travel FAQs

Straight answers to the questions travelers ask me most — drawn from ten years of trips around China.

Do I need a visa to visit China in 2026?

Most visitors arrive visa-free: citizens of 48 countries get a 30-day visa-free entry, and dozens more qualify for 240-hour (10-day) transit stays. Check whether your passport is on the list before you book anything — the rules change often, so see the full visa-free guide for your country.

How much does a private China tour cost?

Private tours typically run $165–220 per person per day on a budget, $220–320 mid-range, and $350–450 for premium, flights excluded. A 10-day private trip for two usually lands between $4,000 and $7,000. Prices move with season and group size, so treat these as reference ranges — real quotes here.

Will my cards and cash work in China, or do I need WeChat Pay / Alipay?

Big hotels and some restaurants take Visa/Mastercard, but taxis, street food, and most shops expect WeChat Pay or Alipay. Both apps now accept foreign cards, so set one up before you land. Step-by-step setup guide.

Is China safe for first-time or solo female travelers?

Yes — China is one of the safest countries I've traveled, including alone as a woman. Violent crime is rare and even late-night streets feel calm. The real risks are practical: scams, food hygiene and traffic. See solo female China routes and the safety guide.

How do I get around China between cities?

The high-speed rail network is the way to go — Beijing–Shanghai is about 4.5 hours and most city pairs are a few hours apart, with tickets bookable online even without a Chinese ID. Full rail guide here.
